July 12, 2024 – Ohio IX Board Meeting

Attendees:  Doug Payauys, Brent Beatty, Nancy Tiemeier, Rob Shema, Josh Rowe, Aaron Holtz, Adam Kujawski, Petar Smilajkov, Dustin Wright, Greg Dunn, Jason Gintert, Luke Skidmore and Chris Tovar

Roll call and Approval of Agenda – Completed

Secretary Report – Minutes Approved 

Next meeting – September 6th at 9:00 with Peter Voderberg and 10:00 Board meeting at Cologix

Associate Membership Application – N/A

Senior Membership Applications – Light Speed.  Looking for form but know they applied.  They were discussed and a motion was made to approve Light Speed pending application and payment.  It was voted and approved.

Governance Report –

  • The Chevron Doctrine was overturned – Title 1 to Title 2.  Lawsuits may win – FCC won’t be able to make a move.
  • BEAD funding – not going well.  Peter may be open to working with us
  • The City of Columbus is interested in joining the IX.  Talked to Sam Orth

Government Committee –

  • N/A

Content Sourcing –

  • Armstrong – checking to see if in Columbus.  They are in Cleveland so could connect there through Involta or H5 (or ARC)
  • Megaport is trying to figure out how to connect and not have to pay outbound traffic.  Will discuss more in the next meeting.  We are working with a new US rep.
  • Cache Fly wants to do cache with us – providing server specs
  • Spectrum – still waiting on their engineering team to complete connection.

Marketing Committee

  • Alex Campbell from Linear 1 want to help with the marketing committee.  She will help with newsletters. 
  • Next event in NE Ohio in late third quarter or early 4th.  Jason and Dustin will help to find a location.

Technical Committee

  • Newly provisioned members:

  • LightSpeed Technologies / Cleveland <– new member, needs inputed — Allowed to be senior member during meeting — @petar: make sure Aaron gets info so he can send them an invoicex
  • Great Plains Communications / Cincinnati
  • GeoStar re-activated / Columbus (COL2)
  • Cloud Propeller upgraded to Dual 100G

CTO Report

  • Our new member form does not forward information properly
  • On website, our POPs need to maybe clearly specify via which carriers clients can connect to us (WOW-Bresco, Cleveland-Fairlawn, Col2-anything, etc.) — maybe get some special/standardized pricing w/ carriers?
    • @josh: to add clarification on website and signup form
  • We have ports with high utilisation (will be reaching out about upgrading)
  • Observium – new monitoring system
  • IXP Manager Upgrade Scheduled for July 26
    • Security updates
    • Ability for client to manage filters
    • 2-factor authentication mandatory for admins
  • Other items:
  • Adam workign on cleanups and standardization of switch configs and port profiles
  • Were workign on standardizing how we bring up clients through quarantine and then production (checking they have their side configured properly without protocols we do not want to see on the interfaces)
  • Cleaning up people who have access to login as admins in IXP Manager (there were too many who are no longer around even)
  • Cal Cook workign on automation so ports get auto provisioned when we change things in IXP manager (to show at the next meeting)
  • Adam inventoried x-conects and such
    • Workign on cleaning up and freeing those we can
    • Adam pulled disconnected cross connects (pruning)
      • we need to get them out of the way if there are any (@adam task)
  • Items we need:
  • Need a label printer at COL2
  • Who is responsible for providing optics, patch panels, cables at remote sites?
    • This is all on us – we should stock everything at each site
  • Extra rack to move caching servers etc. (can Cologix assist again)
    • Cloud Propeller has room for an extra rack for this if need be
  • Talk about moving some infrastruture pieces to cloud propeller
    • VMware license expires June 17, 2025 – 1 year
    • $15-$20k just for licensing
